The Asset Optimization family of Emerson Process Management combines world-class services with innovative products to significantly improve process plant reliability. The results include improved process availability, increased productivity, and reduced equipment cost-of-ownership. Some key historical milestones in the services and technology developments and acquisitions that have converged to form Emerson's Asset Optimization solutions are as follows:

Early Years

1985-1994

Introduced Smart Family of HART-based instruments. Two-way digital communications simultaneous with analog signals opened the way for delivery of diagnostics from field measurement devices. Handheld devices are used to access the information.

Introduced FIELDVUE® Digital Valve Controller and ValveLink® software. They provide diagnostics of the entire valve assembly for delivery using HART communications protocol. At the valve or in the maintenance shop, plant personnel collect and analyze data about valve position, valve operating characteristics and valve performance trending.

Developing the Vision

1996

Introduced AMS asset management software to manage HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus devices. AMS software is based on open standards, enabling its use on Emerson control systems as well as those of third parties. Windows style software design greatly simplifies equipment monitoring and management.

Introduced PlantWeb® field-based architecture. PlantWeb networks final control, plus measurement and analytical devices with host systems and software to build automation and asset optimization solutions. It is the basis of the digital, information-rich environment for delivering the true potential of operations.

1997

Acquired CSI to extend the scope of Emerson's Asset Optimization solutions to include condition monitoring and began offering the RBMware™ application. The RBMware tools perform a full range of equipment condition monitoring such as vibration analysis, oil analysis and infrared thermography.

Building Services

1997

Performance Solutions division formed. This division includes industry centers that provide the complete range of consulting, design, and integration, including value-added asset optimization services. Its extensive organization is skilled at helping customers realize benefits of the new diagnostics technology and assisting them in moving towards predictive maintenance

Collaboration & Integration

2000

Aligned with MRO Software to deliver integrated CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems). Alliance signed to enable delivering of enhanced maintenance management and planning. Emerson's AMS and RBMware are linked to MRO’s MAXIMO™, which will use the information from field devices/equipment to automatically schedule any needed work.

Acquired MDC Technology to extend scope of Asset Optimization solutions. MDC is a leading worldwide supplier of software and services for real-time process optimization, equipment performance monitoring, and process information management.

2001

Aligned with Nexus Engineering for reliability management. Alliance integrates AMS with Nexus Oz™ software; enables Emerson to combine real-time process information and diagnostics information to deliver operator guidance and decision-support in the form of early warnings and help for managing abnormal situations.

AMS declared the standard software of the industry for managing intelligent field devices -- by ARC. Open, standards-based software finds broad acceptance and success with process manufacturing users. AMS software is supported by 38 device manufacturing companies with a total of 188 HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus instruments.

Introduced e-fficiency® web-based equipment performance monitoring service. Industry's first web-based service for monitoring process equipment such as turbines, compressors, heat exchangers, furnaces, boilers, and pumps. Performance results are accessed remotely through a secure Internet connection to provide information to minimize unplanned shutdown and track the cost of performance degradation.

Defining the Future

2001+

Emerson's Asset Optimization solutions fully leverage the web and deliver remote monitoring and diagnostics services for plant-wide assets.
